The 2009 South Sound Community Ride - June 20th |
|
|
Beginners to experienced cyclists can enjoy this Community Ride. Meet our Club members and USA Certified Cycling coaches. Ride with us and find out what a difference cycling can make in your life and the lives of people you love!
Saturday, June 20th at 10:00 a.m.
Location: Foothills Trail - Orting Trailhead
Ride Description: trail only, out and back (choose your distance…5, 10, 14, 20 up to 30 miles)
Bring/Wear: Helmet, comfortable clothes, water & snacks
Note: Heavy rain cancels
Kids welcome! Balloons, prizes, product sampling and more!

Meeting location: alternate between Leschi Starbucks and Mercer Island Tullys.* (Parking in the area side streets if not a green commuter.)
Time: Ready to ride at 9:30am. Rain or below 35 degrees cancels.
Avg. Pace: 16-18 mph
Route: Most days South end of Lake Washington (counter clockwise) to Coulon Park with May Valley, Newcastle or Mercer Island. The ride may break into atleast two groups after Coulon Park; one higher paced (led by no one in particular) and one more "laid back" to May Valley, Newcastle or around Mercer Island.

Notes from the last JDRF NW Ride Club Committee Meeting |
|
|
- Mike Grant will be taking on management of the JDRF NW Ride Club- a position that is evolving
- Mike will be visiting Benaroya Research Institute to start a relationship between our club and their organization
- Mike will be working with Ioana on the Ride Club Type 1 Support Group
- Rebecca will be leading faster rides
- She will send an invitation email to Susan to get distributed to the ride club
- She will use Google group to get out weekly emails to riders who indicate an interest in faster rides
- The route will not change from week to week but start locations may change
- Barbara Harper, Matt Smith, Linda Grafenauer and Yolanda Inguanzo will organize community rides near where they live
- They will get dates and details to Susan to post to our ride site, wiki site, facebook and market to the JDRF community of families
- Elaine will be coaching, leading rides and coordinating group participation by JDRF NW Ride Club members in local rides
- These local rides will help to spread the word about the JDRF Ride Club visually through our club jersey and through handing out business cards that all riders can make on their own or purchase as well as handing out club brochures
- Susan will work with Dustin on the brochures and business cards
- Potential destination riders can be invited to these 'low entry requirement' rides and get to know our riders and JDRF
- A new volunteer position was created that would coordinate getting a booth for the JDRF ride club at local rides and events and finding volunteers to man the booth
- David will be head coach of the JDRF NW ride club again this year as well as leading rides and assisting the community ride leaders with their small ride events
- Matt will coordinate the Ride Mentor program
- Susan will provide to Matt a list of all club riders based on whether they might be mentors, mentees or neither
- Matt will get in touch with mentors to introduce them to the program once they are identified
- Ioana is in charge of communication and the type 1 support group
- Ioana, with Mike's help, will stay in touch with our type 1 cyclists on a regular basis and plan discussion groups
- She will set up a type 1 yahoo group email
- Ioana will continue to oversee the Wiki and the new JDRF Facebook
- She has also volunteered to be our JDRF Ride Club email Group Administrator
- Dustin Grosse
- Dustin will continue to help us with our overall JDRF NW Marketing plan
- Dustin will assist with the development of Ride Club marketing pieces (brochure, business card, etc)

ABC News Lists Human Clinical Trial of Continuous Glucose Monitors Among Year's Most Important Advancements
New York, NY, January 8, 2009 -- The groundbreaking human clinical trial funded by JDRF that showed that continuous glucose monitors can improve diabetes control was cited by the ABC television network as one of the top 10 medical breakthroughs of 2008.
ABCNews.com polled top medical centers and physicians in putting together its list of the past year's most important scientific advances. The 10 developments chosen, which ranged from JDRF's CGM trials to advances in Alzheimer's research and an early blood test for Down syndrome, were considered the most important scientific breakthroughs by medical practitioners and the most interesting by readers.

All the funds our team raises go the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. We are proud of their campaign to raise a billion dollars which has been devoted to find a cure to diabetes. JDRF makes sure that all that we raise goes toward the JDRF mission to find a cure to diabetes.
Who we are
We are an outgoing group of riders of all skill, fitness levels, and ages from children to seniors. We are about community with the benefit of a dedicated cycling coach. The team is open to anyone who wants to ride with us. Each of us has a unique story of how diabetes has touched our lives.
